Sedation Dentistry To Relieve Dental Anxiety

We want to help all our patients maintain a healthy smile but unfortunately, in some cases, their fear or anxiety prevents them from getting the dental treatment they need. We provide sedation dentistry to help put your mind and body at ease to help you feel more confident, relaxed, and comfortable during your time with us.

What is sedation dentistry?

Patients are often keen to know more about sedation dentistry and how it can help.

We provide various dental sedation options to help patients relax and be able to receive dental treatment. Sedation dentistry can benefit people by creating a shorter overall treatment time as well as avoiding more complicated and costly treatments in the future by not taking care of their oral health now.

At Available dental Care, our dentists use 2 forms of sedation dentistry and are as follows:

What is sedation dentistry?
Intravenous Sedation

Nitrous Oxide

Inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose, nitrous oxide and oxygen (laughing gas) combine to make you feel calm and relaxed throughout your treatment and possibly a little light-headed. It’s not intended to send you asleep and you will be able to hear and answer any questions your dentist puts to you. The effects wear off soon after the mask is removed.

Intravenous Sedation

This is a technique where the patient receives a mild dose of general anaesthesia through an intravenous (IV) placed into a vein in their hand or arm. It won’t render them unconscious, but they will be sedated.

It’s used in conjunction with a local anaesthetic to provide pain relief to maximise a patient’s comfort and to enable the dentist to work without any interruptions.

This type of procedure is also referred to as ‘twilight dentistry’. Patients will feel drowsy and, depending on the duration of the treatment and the amount of anaesthesia used, often won’t remember anything at all.

The effects of IV sedation can take at least an hour to wear off, so you will be asked to bring a friend with you to help get you home safely.
When you opt for sedation dentistry, you can be assured that they are monitored throughout their treatment by our experienced staff.
